How is iLASIK different from traditional LASIK?

All LASIK procedures begin with the creation of a flap on the surface of the cornea, followed by a laser treatment that takes place under that flap. The most common method of creating a corneal flap involves a hand-held device that uses a blade, but superior blade-free iLASIK technology makes it possible for Drs. Mattax and Prater to create a more precise flap by using a laser for this important first step of the procedure. Only an iLASIK procedure can be called “all-laser.” Bladeless iLASIK also incorporates precision “wavefront” technology.

What types of vision problems can be corrected with iLASIK?

iLASIK is a bladeless wavefront-guided custom surgical treatment for nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism that reshapes the cornea to improve visual focus.

What is “wavefront” LASIK? How is it different than traditional LASIK?

LASIK can be only as precise as the diagnostic map that guides the surgeon during the treatment.

A traditional LASIK procedure, based on the patient’s eyeglass prescription, can be very effective in reducing or eliminating the need for glasses and contact lenses. However, without a precise map of visual errors that cannot be detected during a regular eye exam, traditional LASIK cannot correct other irregularities that may cause focusing problems.

What happens during an iLASIK procedure?

The surgeon begins by creating a flap in the eye’s cornea. During a traditional LASIK procedure, a microkeratome (a hand-guided surgical instrument that contains a blade) is used to create the flap. However, advanced IntraLASIK technology utilizes a laser for this purpose. After the flap is folded back, Drs. Mattax and Prater use the high-energy microsecond pulses of an excimer laser to remove microscopic layers of tissue to improve the curvature of the cornea. Once the treatment is completed, the flap is folded back into its normal position and begins the rapid healing process. No stitches are necessary because the two layers of the cornea adhere naturally to each other. The entire procedure generally takes less than 20 minutes.
