PRK Introduction

What is PRK?
PRK is one of the original laser eye surgeries and has been helping patients achieve clearer vision for decades. It works by reshaping the surface of the cornea to correct the way light enters the eye—helping you see better without the need for glasses or contacts.
Though similar to LASIK, PRK doesn’t involve creating a corneal flap, making it a better fit for some patients based on their eye health, corneal thickness, or lifestyle needs.

What to expect after PRK
We understand that any eye procedure can feel a bit intimidating, and that’s why our team will be with you every step of the way ensuring you’re comfortable and healing well.
- Right after the procedure, a soft, clear “bandage” contact lens will be placed over your eye to protect it as it heals.
- Mild discomfort and light sensitivity are normal for the first few days, and your vision may fluctuate a bit during this time.
- Most patients feel ready to return to daily tasks, like driving, in about a week.
- Your best, clearest vision may take a few weeks to a few months to fully develop.
We’ll schedule several follow-up visits to carefully monitor your healing and ensure your eyes are recovering as expected.
Is PRK right for you?
PRK is a wonderful option for many patients, especially those who:
- Have thinner corneas or specific corneal conditions
- Are in high-risk professions like law enforcement, aviation, the military, or martial arts
- Have been told they may not be a good candidate for LASIK
Like LASIK, PRK also helps correct more subtle vision imperfections called higher-order aberrations, which can improve the quality of your night vision and reduce glare or halos.
